PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to highly accurately recognize both of a character pattern having a contour of less unevenness and a character pattern having a contour of much unevenness. SOLUTION: The character recognition device is provided with a means 2 for calculating the uneveness of an input character pattern, a means 3 for comparing the uneveness of the input character pattern with a previously prepared threshold and a means 4 for executing smoothing processing for the contour part of the input character pattern when the uneveness of the input character pattern is larger than the threshold. Thus, the unevenness of the input character pattern is obserbed and whether smoothing processing can be executed or not is determined, and unsuitable smoothing processing can be evaded.
