PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a display color changed to black (background), white, red, blue and green according to the increase of an impressed voltage in a color liquid crystal display device of an ECB (double refraction control) system. SOLUTION: A phase difference plate 9 is arranged between a liquid crystal cell 1 and a surface polarizing plate 10. Relations among orientation processing directions 4a, 5a of both oriented films 4, 5 of the liquid crystal cell 1, transmission axes 10a, 11a of both polarizing plates 10, 11 and the lagging axis 9a of the phase difference plate 9 are shown in Figure B when they are viewed from the surface side of the cell. A cell in which the product Δnd between the refractive index anisitrophy Δn and the cell gap (d) of liquid crystal 8 is 1800 nm is used as the liquid crystal cell 1 and a phase difference plate in which retardation R is 1850 nm is used as the phase difference plate 9. Then, when incident light is made white and an impressed voltage between both electrodes 6, 7 is gradually raied from 0 V, a display color is changed to black (background), white, red, blue and green. |
