The operation of nuclear reactor control rod clusters is monitored by analyzing each control rod cluster sub-group displacement command and subsequently recording a signal representing the operation of the cluster insertion and removal mechanism and a control rod cluster position signal over a certain period. The operation of nuclear reactor control rod clusters is monitored by acquisition of control rod cluster operating and positioning parameters, each cluster comprising a mechanism for cluster insertion and removal into and out of a fuel assembly and a displacement control sub-unit (15a-x) which is common to a sub-group of control rod clusters, each control sub-unit (15a-x) being connected for receiving displacement commands to a displacement process control unit (14). The novelty comprises receiving and analyzing each control rod cluster sub-group displacement command between the process control unit (14) and a control sub-unit (15a-x) and subsequently recording one or more signals representing the operation of the cluster insertion and removal mechanism and a control rod cluster position signal during a certain period.
