摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high output power even during a short wavelength recording and to reduce jitter while conducting a recording/reproducing by a magnetic head against a magnetic tape by establishing a specific relationship between a ten-point average surface roughness Rz of the surface of a tape magnetic layer side and a head gap length Hg of the head. SOLUTION: The relationship between the roughness Rz and the length Hg is set to satisfy 0.08<=Rz/Hg<=0.20 and the shortest recording wavelength is set to less than 0.45μm. A magnetic head 11 is made by pasting two cores 13, on which coils 14 are wound, together at a joint section 15. A head gap 12 is formed on the top section of a magnetic head 11. Both sides of the gap 12 is reinforced by glass 16 because the width of the head is narrow. It is desirable to set the roughness Rz of the tape used to be on the order of 10 to 40 nm. The control of the roughness Rz is performed by controlling the roughness Rz of a supporting body or by controlling the amount of oxygen introduced while forming the magnetic layer film.
