PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetooptic element which can obtain extremely large magnetooptic effect and is advantageously applied for various fields. SOLUTION: The magnetooptic element 1 is equipped with a grating structure 3 which diffracts light and a transparent magnetic film 4 formed on the grating structure 3, and when light is made incident on it, the transparent magnetic film increases the rotation of the plane of polarization by diffraction based upon the grating structure 3. Further, the transparent magnetic film contains particulates of Fe, Co, Ni or their alloy of <=200Åin mean particle size. Consequently, extremely large magnetooptic effect can be obtained and the element is advantageously applied for various fields.
