A gluing station (10) is located over a movable web (12) of paper or card, etc. Glue dots (11,23) are deposited onto the card from a nozzle opening (17) via a bottom opening (28) in an enclosure (25). Unless correctly required to dispense a dot, the nozzle opening (17) is closed by a valve stem (20,21) sealing against a seat (22). Any spurious airborne adhesive particles, produced by the opening and closing of the valve, are trapped within the enclosure surrounding the nozzle.
