<p>A communications process and apparatus is provided with scoped, partially non-geographic addressing. The processes are carried out by one or more switches (12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44) in a communications system (10). A first device (42) in the system has a scoped address, including at least one geographic identifier and a customer identifier. A second device (5) sends a setup message with addressing information to a switch (16) in the system. The switch (16) examines the message and consults a database (17) with the custmer identification to determine forwarding information. The switch (16) forwards the message to a first device (42) according to the forwarding information obtained from the database (17). The second device (5) sends a connection message to the first device, thereby establishing a connection.</p> |
