The apparatus has a light source (11) for providing an initial optical signal. A detector (21) produces an initial detection signal based on the optical signal and produces a complex detection signal corresponding to the scanning dimensions (D,C) of the scanned body (3). A signal processor (17) determines the scanning dimensions (B,C) of the body by calculation using the initial detection signal and the complex detection signal. An Independent claim is included for the determination of the dimensions of a scanned body.
