The chewing gum contains papain as bleaching agent in an amount between 0.2 and 5% by weight with respect to the formulation as a whole, together with base gum and other suitable additives for its formulation and to improve its dental-enamel-protecting properties and its organoleptic characteristics. The chewing gum is in the form of a coated tablet and the papain is in the covering layer. A typical formulation of the chewing gum comprises papain (1-5%), base gum (18-21%), xylitol (5-45%), sorbitol (19- 70%), malitol (8-10%), together with other additives. The use of the chewing gum removes stains on the teeth with minimum abrasion since the system hydrolyses the peptide bond between the dental plate (denture) and the tartar (scale, plaque).
