Potential adapter 10 with integral radio-frequency port, suitable for coupling an outside antenna 17 to a communications device 30 by means of a cable 12 which is usually connected to a cigar lighter of a vehicle or to another power supply source at one end, and to an inlet connector of the communications device 30 at the other. The potential adapter also provides an RF input/output capability for connecting an external vehicle antenna, and the communications device could include an RF switch 34 and control circuitry for selecting either the internal antenna or else the external antenna for optimal reception. <IMAGE>
