<p>A display for a Schlieren projector (10) or the like includes plural picture elements (50) of volumes (51) of liquid crystal (52) in a medium (53), a mask or separator (17) between respective picture elements for transmitting light without substantial scattering, and a Schlieren optics projector (16), including means for discriminating between light scattered by respective elements beyond a prescribed angle and light transmitted by said separator or by light transmitted by said elements without scattering outside such prescribed angle. A method of making a display element for a projector includes dissolving a liquid crystal material in a medium, and curing different portions of the medium differently. A method of projecting a relatively high contrast image includes directing collimated light (110c) through a liquid crystal device (104) that provides selective transmitting of light (111t) or controlled scattering of light (111s), locating between respective portions of the liquid crystal device a mask or separator (17) for transmitting light without substantial scattering, using Schlieren optical system (16) discriminating between transmitted light and scattered light, and projecting the scattered light to form an optical output.</p> |
