Tank for digesting agricultural and communal sludge has an agitator (22) located in a tube (12) beneath a filling connection (7). The extended horizontal projection of the agitator axis (23) intersects the circumference of the tank chordally. An Independent claim is included for the method of operating the agitator, turning it on when material is fed into the tank. Preferably rotation direction is reversed to clean out the agitator pipe at intervals of a day to a week.
