The electromagnetic operating device (1) uses an actuator (7) with an opening magnet (9) and a closing magnet (8), cooperating with an armature (12) for operation of the engine valve(2) against the force of an opening spring (21) and a closing spring (22), holding the armature in an intermediate position between the magnets. The spring force of at least one of the springs is adjustable via a setting device (29,30,24,27) for altering the counter-balance position of the armature.
