Method for producing a coating layer on the surface of a moving paper or cardboard web by using a jet nozzle as application device, the coating slip being sprayed on to the surface of the web as a free-flying unsupported jet. The coating mixture applied to the web is smoothed out and scraped to a desired coating thickness by means of a suitable scraper instrument such as a doctor blade, a scraper bar or an air brush. For adjusting the delay time between application and scraping the coating slip is applied to the web as a free jet without return flow by means of a device, which can be displaced counter to the input direction of the web past the bottom dead centre point of the counter-roll. <IMAGE>
