Exhaust emission control device and method of manufacturing the same

A highly durable exhaust emission control device which is provided in a container disposed in an intermediate portion of an exhaust system, wherein the exhaust emission control device comprises (a) a heat-resistant porous body (1) having communicating pores, (b) a mixture of copper oxide (2) and aluminium oxide (3) supported on the surface of the porous body (1), and (c) platinum (4) supported on the surface and an inner portion of the mixture. The grain size of the copper oxide (2) is from 0.1 mu m to 50 mu m. The exhaust emission control device is manufactured by preparing the heat-resistant porous body (1); applying to the porous body a slurry of a mixture of copper oxide (2) and aluminium oxide (3) and/or compounds convertible into these oxides by firing, baking a the mixture and/or compounds; and applying a water-soluble platinum compound (4) to the porous body, and baking the platinum compound. The platinum compound (4) may be applied with the oxide mixture (2,3) and/or the compounds of copper and aluminium to the porous body (1).
