The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for the hygienic treatment of biowaste. In this method waste material is mixed together in a mixing vessel 1 to form a biomass, from whence it is conveyed to a mill 6, where it is ground to a suitable grain size. This finely ground biomass is intended to be temporarily stored in an intermediate storage vessel 7, from whence it is returned to the mixing vessel when the latter has been emptied and flushed. The hygienic treatment of the biomass is thus performed in the mixing vessel by heating the mass up and agitating it in order to render any pathogens and weed seeds harmless. The hygienically treated biomass is then fed into a digester 15 for further processing. <IMAGE>
