Battery type determination for a radio telephone or battery charger

A battery or battery pack for a portable radio telephone is provided with a machine readable identification on its exterior. An electrical device, such as a portable radio telephone main unit and/or battery charger, has a battery identifier for reading or sensing the identification. Based upon the identification read by the identifier, the electrical device can prevent or establish an operational electrical connection with the battery cells in the battery. <IMAGE>
