The method involves a detection unit for physiological characteristics interacting with a comparison unit, in which the characteristics of the authorized user are stored which produces a release signal enabling the user to start the vehicle. If the user has not been authorized, the comparison unit requests additional identification information contained in a separate memory carried by the user. If the comparison unit receives the ID it generates a special release signal.
