PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as a monomer usable for synthesizing a polymer precursor. SOLUTION: This new compound is an o-nitrophenol derivative or o- nitrothiophenol derivative of formula I (A<1> to A<3> are each H, F, CH3 CF3 , OCH3 , OCF3 , CH2 CH3 or the like; T is O or S; R is an each <=6C alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or the like) or formula II (R* is H or the same as R), e.g. 3-(2- propenyloxy)-4-nitro-2,5,6-trifluorophenol. The compound of formula I is obtained by reaction of a compound of formula III (X is a halogen) with an excess amount of a basic agent TH at 20-100 deg.C, while the compound of formula II(wherein R=R*) is obtained by reaction of the compound of formula III with a stoichiometric amount of the basic agent. From this new compound, o- aminophenol or o-aminothiophenol as a monomer for polymer production can be easily obtained.
