PURPOSE:To produce the subject compound having a specific site specifically labeled with a <13>C atom and useful for the research of the metabolism routes of porphyrin compounds by culturing a porphyrin compound-producing microorganism belonging to the genus Arthrobacter in a medium containing a specific compound. CONSTITUTION:A porphyrin compound-producing microorganism [e.g. Arthrobacter.hyalinus (FERM 3125)] is cultured in a medium containing a 5-aminolevulinic acid of formula I (x, *, triangle, quadrangle, and circle are <13>C atom or natural C atom wherein when one of these signals is the <13>C atom, the others are the natural C atoms), followed by collecting porphyrin compounds of formulas II, III, IV and V (R is H, lower alkyl, salt-forming cation) from the cultured product or separating the compounds as lower alkyl esters thereof. The culturing is generally performed at 20-40 deg.C and at a pH of 4-9.5 ordinarily 2-20 days under an aeration condition. |
