Dry mortar and plaster contains a binder and a light aggregate. The particles of the light aggregate are enclosed by a powdered inorganic material. The specific surface area of the inorganic material according to Blaine is more than 8000 (preferably 15000-25000) cm2/g. Production of the light aggregate is also claimed comprising mixing the aggregate with the powdered inorganic material to form a shrouding of powdered material on the surface of the light aggregate particles.
