The procedure consists of towing a frame (7) with a furrow opening implement (13) and one or more ballast tanks (11) over the surface of the water course bed (3a), laying the cable (9) in the furrow and covering it. The frame is towed by a surface barge (1), and the bed is monitored by an echo-sounding probe (20) ahead of the furrow-opener to detect any obstacles. The cable can be deployed from drums (19) on the frame, or from the barge via a manipulator arm, and in a variant of the procedure the furrow can be made by a jet apparatus in a loose surface layer of the bed which back-fills automatically afterwards. e.g. for water or gas, in river or canal bed.
