The procedure is particularly aimed at communication between facsimile machines using the internet. The transmitting machine incorporates data in the descriptor fields of the electronic mail file detailing the required procedure, such as to return status of the facsimile machine to the sender. The receiving terminal, having identified and decoded this data then automatically executes the appropriate procedure.
