The ultrasonic transducer operates at a nominal excitation frequency greater than 20 MHz, and preferably between 50 to 80 MHz. It has a focal length greater than 10mm, preferably of the order of 25mm, in order to explore the macular region of the eye. The transducer is coupled to a high frequency transmitter/receiver (20 to 200 MHz) and an amplification, memory and image processing system which produces an image signal of the part of the eye being studied. The transducer is a probe which can be displaced in proximity to the rear ocular wall. The displacement can be along two orthogonal axes or in an arc. The probe is protected by a plastic membrane.
