Process for handling calls using call interval transfer functions for an ATM switched network

During periods of network overload, calls are prioritized based on information supplied at the onset of the call. High priority calls are immediately allocated an access time interval. Other calls are given access based on the determined binary rate (DBR), the statistical binary rate (SBR), available binary rate (ABR) and ATM asynchronous block transfer rate (ATM,ABT), and unspecified binary rate (UBR) where calls are not prioritized or have equal priority.
