A pragmatic trellis-coded modulator (28) includes a parsing circuit (48) for converting input information bits (30) into uncoded information bits (51) and to-be-coded information bits (53), a convolutional encoding circuit (62) for convolutional converting each of the to-be-coded information bits processed therein per unit interval of time, and a mapping circuit (68) for mapping the uncoded and the convolutional encoded information bits to provide a quadrature signal defining mapped phase points.
