摘要 The device has two orthogonal optical rotation rate sensors (1,2) mounted on a base plate (7), to provide an accurate north direction indication, before rotation through 90 deg for alignment with the east-west axis, to calculate the geographical position at spaced intervals. The parallel to the earth's axis and its projection on the earth's surface (which is an elliptical plane) are first calculated, and the location is used to project the longitudinal on to the earth's surface. The enclosed angle between the two projected lines give the geographic position of the location, if the periodically variable correction angle due to the yearly and daily rotation of the earth's rotation is subtracted.
