A telephone system comprises a plurality of handsets and a base unit coupleable to a local office via one or more external telephone lines and for communicating with each of the plurality of handsets. The base unit detects, acknowledges, and receives a caller ID message incoming from the local office, without interrupting communications of the plurality of handsets. The base unit notifies the plurality of handsets of the caller ID message, and transmits, to selected handsets, the caller ID message.
