Adjustable hydrostatic unit (5) is combined with multi-shaft compound planetary gear unit (9) having two input shafts (8) and at least two output shafts (21-23), together with associated multistep gear stages (26,27) to form gear ranges connecting at synchronous points. At these points, clutch (34,35,41,42) for the new range is closed and that for the old range is opened.
