The hinge or bending points are formed as slots (6) with a width of 0.1 to 0.5 mm and the depth of the slots amounts to at least 0.7 times the material thickness of the column covering. The slots are arranged in preformed wall thickness reductions (8) and are interrupted for increasing stability. On the outside of the column covering (3) a decorative layer (4) is arranged. The slots are arranged longitudinally and/or crossways. They have a rectangular cross-section. Their production is by means of laser beam radiation or by mechanical cutting using suitable cutting sheets.
