In a hot water supply system, water flows through the pipe system incorporating a housing with a water slot within which an alternating magnetic field is generated by an electrified coil. The coil generates the field using either alternating current, or direct current and polarity is reversed at regular intervals. The electrical supply has a control unit linked to the coil. The phase between the regular main intervals is interrupted by a third phase which reverses the magnetic polarity before the commencement of the next main phase.
