Data exchange between postage meter and chip card

The data exchange is controlled through data records according to a protocol for each specific chip card type, whereby an additional data record is provided for loading data, including a base number and a follow-up number. The base number is compared with a stored first code, and the follow-up number has a predetermined relation to a base number of a follow-up card, to be entered subsequently in the postage meter. The method involves using a postage meter with a chip card writing/reading unit for different types of chip cards, and a control arrangement for uploading or entering data from the chip card. The control arrangement controls a data exchange through data records according to a protocol for each specific chip card type. At least one additional data record is provided, for loading data, including a base number and a follow-up number, from a specially secured, nonvolatile memory area of the chip card into nonvolatile memory areas of the postage meter. The base number loaded into the postage meter is compared with a stored first code to modify an association of stored characteristics or data with a second code which is subsequently entered. The follow-up number entered in the postage meter has a predetermined relation to a base number of a follow-up card entered subsequently in the postage meter.
