A catalyst composition comprising a catalyst and an activating cocatalyst is claimed. The catalyst has the formula LMX1X2, wherein X1 and X2 are independently halide, hydride, triflate, acetate, trifluroacetate, tris perfluorotetraphenyl borate, tetrafluoroborate, straight chain or branched alkyl or alkoxy of 1-12 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl or cycloalkoxy of 3-12 carbon atoms, or aryl; M is Cu, Ag, or Au; L is a nitrogen-containing bidentate ligand. The nitrogen in L is preferably contained in 5 or 6-membered heterocyclic rings, two of which are bonded to a hydrocarbyl bridging group. The activating cocatalyst is generally an aluminum compound or other Lewis acid. |
