A proportional flow valve comprises a main valve member (32) and diaphragm (17). The valve includes a cylindrical bearing ring (19) mounted on the main valve member and slideable within an axial bore leading from a main valve seat to an outlet port for axially stabilizing the main valve member. The outer circumference of the bearing ring includes circumferential grooves for producing eddy currents and turbulence to enhance the limitation of pressure differential across the main valve member.
