PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original scanning device capable of executing AMS (auto-magnification selection) processing, even at the time of loading various originals together. SOLUTION: The original scanning device is provided with original scanning means 1 scanning by projecting light beams on the original 4, a transporting path 10 communicating from the original storing section 5 to the original discharging section 8 across the scanning position by the original scanning means 1, driving means (15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20) letting the original on the transporting path 10 moved on the transporting path 10, and original size detecting means (23 and 24) disposed in the position between the original storing section 5 and the original scanning position 7 of the transport path 10. In the mean time, the device is allowed to detect the original size by the above original detecting means, while to transport the original 4 from the original storing section 5 toward the original scanning position 7. Subsequently, the device is allowed to perform the scanning by the original scanning means 1, on transporting the original 4 to the original scanning position 7, without passing through the original discharging section 8.
