PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for olefin polymerization enabling continuous operation of a commercial plant without causing adhesion, etc., of a polymer to a reactor during polymerization by bringing a specific transition metal compound into contact with a specific active compound, a specific compound and a solid material, etc. SOLUTION: This catalyst is obtained by bringing (A) a transition metal compound having a cyclicηbinding anion ligand into contact with (B) an activated compound comprising a cation capable of forming a non-coordinating anion having compatibility with a cation capable of forming a metal complex having catalyst activity by reacting with the component A and used in an amount corresponding to 0.5-10 mol based on 1 mol component A, (C) an organometal oxy compound having an unit of the formula [M<2> is a metal of the group XIII to XV of periodic table or metalloid; R is a 1-12C hydrocarbon or a substituted hydrocarbon; (n) is a valence of a metal M<2> ; (m) is >=2], (D) a solid material and (E) a necessary, an organoaluminum compound. The catalyst is especially useful for ethylene polymerization.
