PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce arom. halogen compds., hydrogen chloride gas, chlorine gas, or metal chlorides generated in burning municipal waste, etc. SOLUTION: This burning method comprises supplying sulfur oxides or sulfur compds. generating sulfur oxides at 1,000 deg.C or lower to a waste to be burned and burning the resulting mixture at 200-1,000 deg.C in the presence of oxygen gas. The method may further contain a step of removing sulfur oxides from an exhaust gas generated in burning. An additive is also provided which contains sulfur-contg. compds. contained in vulcanized rubbers of automotive tires.
