PROJECTION TYPE IMAGE DISPLAY DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device which uses an inexpensive liquid crystal panel having a small number of pixels and has its picture quality improved by making the black matrix inconspicuous. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display device is equipped with a light source part 1 which projects white light in one direction, a dot matrix type liquid crystal light valve 5 which displays an image according to an input signal by modulating luminous flux, and a projection lens 8 which enlarges and projects the modulated luminous flux on a screen and also equipped with a λ/4 plate on the modulating means side between the modulating means and projection lens and a birefringent optical element 7 which separates unpolarized incident light into an ordinary light beam and an extraordinary light beam having planes of polarization crossing each other at right angles on the projection lens side.
