SOLUTION: When the automatic answering telephone mode is not set, it is judged whether the caller telephone number is recognized or not based on the output signal of a caller telephone number discrimination circuit 5. When it is recognized, the caller telephone number is displayed on a display unit 6 and the regular telephone mode is executed. When the caller telephone number is not recognized, the regular telephone mode is executed. When the automatic answering telephone mode is set, the caller telephone number is displayed on the display unit 6 and a command signal is outputted to a recording/reproducing circuit 4 after prescribed time passes and a response message is transmitted to a telephone line. When the caller telephone number is not recognized, shift to the automatic telephone answering telephone mode is inhibited and the response message is not transmitted.
