<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the consumption of an alkali by recycling acetic acid which has been discarded in waste water and recovering cobalt acetate and manganese acetate of the catalyst used. SOLUTION: An aromatic compd. having an alkyl substituent is oxidized in a liq. phase by a molecular oxygen-contg. gas in an acetic acid solvent in the presence of a heavy-metal catalyst to obtain an aromatic carboxylic acid. In this method, acetic acid is recovered by distillation from the reaction mother liquor 1 obtained by separating the aromatic carboxylic acid from the oxidation reaction product, the remainder 4 is made into a slurry, and the acetic acid in the filtrate 9 freed from the solids 8 is recovered by liq.-liq. extraction.</p> |
