<p>FIELD: carpet coverings laid by hook-and-loop means. SUBSTANCE: carpet covering base has first lower layer of fibrous nonwoven material. Loop fastening binder is applied onto second side of first layer. According to other version, lower layer is made from polyester filaments, with coating inhibiting penetration of binder being preliminarily applied to second side of lower layer. In carpet covering having main piled layer, piles are sewn through main layer to form pile bundles on second side and base. Pile bundles are covered with binder having voids within and about bundles. Base is formed from at least one layer. According to another version, binder has voids within and about pile bundles to provide expansion and shrinkage of pile bundles. Binder may have tenacity sufficient for permitting pile bundles to expand to the extent preventing covering from immense expansion. Method for producing covering with upper piled layer and lower base layer involves determining expansion force of upper component upon moistening of carpet, with base layer selected having hardness sufficient for counteracting expansion force of upper pile component. Binder adapted for covering pile bundles on reverse side of upper layer has voids within and about pile bundles and/or such binder is made flexible.
