PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform speech communication during automatic recording even if there is a telephone call form a third person during an automatic answering service function by shifting to normal speech communication by pressing a start key which start normal speech communication while a counter counts. SOLUTION: This portable telephone system A is provided with memory which stores time up time of an automatic answering service, incoming response which receives that there is an incoming call from another telephone set T when the automatic answering service is in ON state, a counter which counts time up time from the incoming response and a start key which starts normal speech communication while the counter counts and shifts to normal speech communication by pressing the start key. That is, when there is an incoming call, e.g., during driving a vehicle, the system A sends an automatic holding request signal to a base station B by pressing a safety key, the system A and the station B become a hold state and the opposite terminal telephone set T which makes a call is connected to an automatic holding service.
