PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the control signal of program searching information or the like from a subcode area at the time of a high speed search by arranging a first head and a second head so that the phase difference between amplitude cycles of reproduced envelopes from both heads at the time of the search satisfies a specific relation. SOLUTION: When the amplitude cycle of a reproduced envelope, a reproducable time width at the time of the search and the time width of the subcode area recorded on a tape to be searched are respectively defined as Bperi, Btime and SUBtime and DETp is defined to be DETp=(Btime-SUBtime)×2π/Bperi, the heads are arranged so that the phase difference between amplitude cycles of reproduced envelopes from both heads at the time of the search satisfies DETp<=X<=2π-DETp when DETp is not larger thanπand satisfies 2π-DETp<=X<=DETp when the DETp is larger thanπ. Moreover, even when the searching speed is changed, a reproducing probability can be maintained to some extent by setting the phase difference to 180 degrees.
