PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve efficiency of light in a projection liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: S-polarized light wave 120S emitted from a light source part 101 is reflected by a splitting surface 106a of a polarization beam splitter 106 and made incident on a liquid crystal panel 107. P-polarized light wave 120P emitted from the light source part 101 transmits the splitting surface 106a of the polarization beam splitter 106 and is reflected by a total reflecting mirror 111 and guided to a same optical path as the emitted direction. P-polarized light wave 120P made incident again on the polarization beam splitter 106 transmits the splitting surface 106a and is returned in the direction of the light source part 101. The returned p-polarized light wave 120P is irregularly reflected by a reflector 103, etc., and component transformed to s-polarized light wave is also generated. The transformed s-polarized light wave can be made incident on the liquid crystal panel 107 as the s-polarized light wave 120S. |
