The safety mechanism consists of two sliding components (2, 3) with a spring (10) between them and end notches (6, 7) to fit against two adjacent rungs (4, 5), being fixed at the required length by a wing nut. One of the two components has a side plate with cams (13, 14) for gripping a safety rope connecting the ladder to a fixed support.
