PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal element having a high contrast, high response speed, high fineness and high luminance by providing at least one substrate with an alignment control film consisting of specific polyimide subjected to a uniaxial alignment treatment. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal element formed by holding a chiral smectic liquid crystal compsn. between a pair of the substrates provided with electrodes is the liquid crystal element which has the alignment control film which is subjected to the uniaxial alignment treatment and consists of the polyimide expressed by formula I on at least one substrate. In the formula I, A denotes a tetravalent org. residue to obtain linearity and B denotes the group expressed by formula II. In the formula II, R1 , R2 respectively independently denote H or alkyl group; a and b are equal and denote 0 or 1, c denotes 0 or 1. X, Y respectively independently an integer of >=0 but do not simultaneously turn to 0; n denotes an integer of >=2. |
