IMPROVED ADDITIVE FOR OVERCHARGE PROTECTION FOR RECHARGEABLE NONAQUEOUS LITHIUM BATTERY

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safe battery including an additive for protection from overcharge. SOLUTION: A rechargeable nonaqueous lithium battery can be protected against ill-use of overcharge by compounding a small quantity of suitable additive into an electrolyte. An additive selected from a group consisting of phenyl- R-phenyl compound (R is aliphatic hydrocarbon.), fluorocarbon exchanged biphenyl compound and 3-thiophenacetonitrile ensures an excellent cycle performance for a high voltage lithium ion battery and further ensures sufficient protection against overcharge. As a gas generating agent suitable to a battery equipped with an electric cut-off device, 2,2-diphenylpropane can be used.
