PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve accuracy for the detection of a reference position on an intermediate transfer belt. SOLUTION: Reflected light from a reflecting tape provided on the intermediate transfer belt 4 is detected by a sensor 22. The sensor 22 is fixed to the frame 18 of a belt unit where the belt 4 is stretched in order to keep a distance to the belt 4 constant. On the other hand, a backing 23 is arranged on the back surface of the belt 4, so that the belt 4 is restrained from vibrating and the distance to the sensor 22 can be kept.
