Disposal of infected animal cadavers by autoclaving and fermentation comprises: (a) introducing the cadavers into a first autoclave (2) in which they are cooked and reduced to a mass which can be conveyed by a pump; (b) pumping the mass to a second autoclave (3) where it is sterilised; (c) homogenising the sterilised mass in a mixer assembly (4); (d) separating the homogenised substance if required into fractions containing different fat contents and placing them in separate tanks (5, 6) to accumulate in batches, the contents of the tanks are discharged to a mixer tank (7) as an intermediate product; (e) a fermentation reactor (8) which accepts the contents of the mixer tank, and (f) processing the residues.
