Torque converter with friction clutch

The torque converter consists of a housing (12) with a turbine (26) and a clutch (42) for selective engagement of the turbine rotor and housing. The friction surface (86) of the clutch is on a support (66) connected to a clutch component (44) able to rotate relative to the turbine and pivot relative to the friction surface about a peripheral line (78) passing round the torque converter's axis. The clutch friction surface is convex in shape and fits against a matching concave surface on the torque converter housing to ensure full engagement.
